Seneca resident Jennifer Hunnicutt was detained after she abandoned more than a dozen animals on her property in South Carolina to fend for themselves. Several animals were saved by investigators, but 15 animals were discovered dead there, according to police reports. When a welfare check revealed that numerous animals had been left unattended on the property and that a goat had become caught in a fence, Animal Control authorities became aware of the situation last month.

The 36-year-old lady was reported missing from her Alexander Road property by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office for over two months. Six animals, including “a ram, a sheep, and four pygmy goats,” were discovered alive along with “four dogs, a cat, a tame bearded dragon lizard, a chicken, and eight goats.” The Law & Crime report claims that the dead animals were mostly skeletal or decayed. Authorities are still looking into the reasons why she left the animals. The Law of South Carolina states that anyone who “tortures, torments, needlessly maims, cruelly kills, or inflicts excessive or repeated and unnecessary pain or suffering on an animal, or by omission or commission causes such acts to be performed, is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment for a term of not less than one hundred and eighty days and not more than five years, and shall also be punished by a fine of five thousand dollars.”

Hunnicutt was charged with a total of 35 offenses, 15 of which were felonies, and was freed from jail on bond on Thursday, April 6, after posting $102,975 bail. According to the sheriff’s office, Hunnicutt was charged with denying the animals of necessary nutrition and/or shelter, or by omission, which led to the deaths of some of the animals, based on evidence gathered during the investigation. She was accused of leaving some of the animals behind without finding them a new owner or providing for their basic needs.
