Tire Nichols, a 29-year-old African-American man, was killed when five Memphis police officers brutally assaulted him at a traffic stop. Since then, the Police Department has fired five officers. Now a sixth identity has surfaced and it is related to the tragic incident that happened on January 7th.

After being connected to Tire’s fatal arrest, a sixth officer named Preston Hemphill was fired. The dismissal came after an administrative inquiry into the arrest was held. Hemphill allegedly violated several departmental policies during the arrest of Tire Nichols. Memphis police said the investigation is ongoing and several officers are being investigated for possible violations of department policies.

Preston Hemphill has yet to face any charges. Several EMTs were also fired after they failed to “perform a proper evaluation of Mr. Nichols’s patient” while he was injured. The fatal arrest of African-American Tire Nichols has created a public outrage. Several protests took place in New York and Memphis after body camera footage capturing the brutal arrest was made public.

The Memphis Police Department also cited a thorough internal investigation into the matter. The list of five police officers who have already been fired has been given a new name. During the arrest of Tire Nichols, Preston Hemphill was found to have violated numerous departmental policies.

Policies violated included truthfulness, compliance with Taser standards as well as uniform standards, personal conduct, and the inventory and processing of recovered property. Memphis police confirmed the same, mentioning that Hemphill has been on duty since 2018. Investigators found that Preston Hemphill fired a stun gun at Tire Nichols when he tried to flee from police at a previous traffic stop.

The incident was the first of the 29-year-old’s altercation with police that day. Preston was captured on body camera of him chasing Tire Nichols down the street before returning to the initial traffic stop. He was also heard to say:

Preston, however, was not present at the scene where the five police officers beat up Tire Nichols. It has been reported that the sixth policeman is yet to face charges. Memphis police issued a statement saying: Preston Hemphill’s lawyer, Lee Gerald, upheld his dismissal, stating: According to Memphis police, they are investigating several officers for possible violations of departmental policy.

After an internal investigation, five police officers were fired on January 20. They have been identified as Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Justin Smith, and Demetrius Haley. The officers were found to have used “excessive force” and “failed to render assistance during Nichols’ arrest.”

The five former Memphis police officers are currently facing charges of second degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of aggravated assault and one count of official oppression. The fact that Preston’s identity has not been exposed before has caused dissatisfaction and concern among netizens.

Several emergency medical technicians have also been fired from their jobs in connection with the fatal arrest of Tire Nichols. The fired EMTs have been identified as Robert Long and JaMicheal Sandridge. They allegedly failed “to conduct a proper evaluation of Mr. Nichols’s patient.”

Memphis Police Department Lt. Michelle Whitaker, who was inside the first ambulance on the scene, was also fired. A seventh police officer, who has not yet been identified, has been placed on administrative leave. The department said:

According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office: Tire Nichols’ family lawyer, Ben Crump, issued a statement saying: The Memphis Police Department uploaded a Facebook post saying Preston Hemphill had received at least 40 hours of mental illness training before joining the force’s Crisis Intervention Team. Law enforcement officials mentioned that the case is currently under investigation and internal investigations are still ongoing.
