Michael Boatwright Incident Detail
Jurors deliberated for a little over seven days before returning their verdicts Monday, marking the end of a trial that lasted about a month. Each convicted perpetrator is expected to receive a mandatory life sentence. Onfroy, whose double- and quadruple-platinum records came along with a dedicated cult following both inside and outside his South Florida community, was 20 at the time of his death.
He is remembered as a rising star whose career was on the verge of exploding, even as he also faced criminal charges related to the alleged assault of an ex-girlfriend. Authorities said Onfroy suffered multiple gunshot wounds after the convicted murderers shot him while he was behind the wheel of his BMW, which was parked outside a RIVA Motorsports store in Deerfield Beach.
A family relative was sitting in the passenger side of the car and managed to flee the vehicle unharmed. The deadly armed robbery was caught on surveillance camera. Jurors in the Boatwright, Williams and Newsome criminal trial viewed the graphic images in court last February, CBS Miami reported. It showed an SUV approaching Onfroy’s car in the motorcycle shop parking lot before coming to a stop perpendicular to the BMW, preventing it from going out into the street.
Two masked people can be seen getting out of the van and approaching the driver’s side window of Onfroy’s car. A confrontation ensues, ending with an assailant firing a gun through the window. Both suspects then proceed to escape with $50,000 in cash, which Onfroy was carrying inside a Louis Vuitton bag when the shooting occurred, according to testimony heard during the trial. He had planned to use the money to buy a motorcycle at the store, prosecutors said.
Boatwright and Newsome were the assailants seen on surveillance footage, according to the prosecution, and the fatal shooting followed what was allegedly a visible fight over money. Prosecutors say Boatwright was the gunman and Newsome was accused of pointing a loaded gun at people inside the BMW. Williams was driving the getaway vehicle and remained inside the van when the shooting took place, according to testimony heard in court.
A fourth man, Robert Allen, 26, was previously arrested and charged in connection with Onfroy’s murder. Allen pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder in August last year and later testified on behalf of the prosecution in court as the trial’s first witness. He could still face a life prison sentence for his alleged role in the murder.
The prosecution built its case around the allegation that the violent robbery that preceded Onfroy’s death was carefully planned. Prosecutors told juries in Broward County that the three suspects on trial had devised a plan the day before the June 17 Deerfield Beach shooting that involved renting a vehicle and traveling through the area to commit several robberies. They allegedly saw Onfroy leaving the parking lot of the motorcycle shop, where they intended to purchase a face mask, and decided to attack him, prosecutors said.
