On Wednesday, March 22, Georgia authorities reported that detention officer Kawana Jenkins had been arrested for having a relationship with an inmate. According to WSBTV, the allegations arose after officials discovered a contraband cell phone on which a video of Jenkins engaging in explicit acts with the inmate had been stored.
According to AJC, Kawana Jenkins has been employed at the Fulton County Detention Center since 2019. Georgia officials expressed outrage after viewing video of the incident. Authorities say Jenkins had an inappropriate long-term relationship with the prisoner, even going so far as to give him the smuggled cell phone used to record the event.

Kawana Jenkins has been charged with two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee or agent, five counts of violation of oath by a public official, two counts of reckless conduct, two counts of cruelty to inmates, and one count of Giving an inmate a prohibited item without authorization.
In an official statement to the press, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat condemned Kawana Jenkins’ actions. While the case of the alleged Kawana Jenkins affair shocked the county, relationships between inmates and detention officers are nothing new.
According to NBC, Brenda Smith, a law professor who fights against inmate exploitation and abuse, said such relationships are common. She noted, however, that they are troubling because of the power imbalance between inmates and officers.
Smith said two factors lead to such cases. The first is that the inmates have very little privacy. In the case of female officers, although they occupy a position of power to some extent, they are also frequently harassed and objectified by male inmates.

Inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat were allegedly in a relationship with corrections officer Joyce Mitchell, who allegedly helped them escape.
