Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren raised concerns about gun violence in the United States at a meeting of European Union defense ministers in Prague on Tuesday, August 30. She expressed these concerns after a shooting in Indianapolis that left a Dutch soldier, Simmie Poetsema, dead. and two wounded in the early hours of Saturday, August 27. Sharing details of the incident, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said, according to Fox News, that there was a disturbance at a bar.
Hogsett said: “As I understand there was a fight, a ruckus, in a bar and the Dutch guards had returned to their hotel. I’m not entirely sure what they were doing outside, but they told me that the alleged perpetrators fired from a vehicle and finally three were victims of that shooting. This killed Poetsema, 26, a member of the Dutch Commando Corps, the hotel, and the other two sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. According to the report, all three were in Indiana for training at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, a military base.

During the meeting, Ollongre was quoted as saying by the Associated Press, “We do a lot of training of our military in the United States, and we don’t really expect this to happen. So it’s very, very concerning for us. We’ve read things in the media, we’ve heard what the mayor said, but we think it’s very important to have a really thorough investigation. So we’re waiting on that until we comment on what really happened.” The defense minister also mentioned that there is “good contact” between the Dutch military police and the authorities in Indianapolis.
On the other hand, Hogsett said he believed downtown was safe and officials were working to reduce violence. He said, “Too often, not just in Indianapolis, conflict resolution has turned into people pulling out guns and shooting at each other.”
According to a press release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 22-year-old Shamar Duncan was arrested on Tuesday, August 30, for the murder. However, the police said that he would decide the final charges against him after review of the case by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO). “Until then, he will not be eligible for release,” the statement said.
