Calvin Wijeweera Wiki – Calvin Wijeweera Biography
Calvin Wijeweera, 17, was walking to a shopping center in Carlingford with a friend last Thursday when he was struck by a car and pinned under a van on Rembrandt St. His friend, another 17-year-old boy, was injured and was taken to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, a 90-year-old woman, had to be cut from her Mitsubishi Lancer sedan which had slammed into the side of a van after colliding with a tree. She was taken to the hospital to undergo the mandatory tests. Calvin’s family came to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2008 in search of a better life.
Calvin Wijeweera Age
Calvin Wijeweera is 17 years old.
The 17-year-old student dreamed of becoming an engineer. His sister Ovindi Wijeweera was abroad when she was told what had happened to her younger brother. On the flight back to Sydney, she kept thinking that she was going to wake up from this nightmare,” she told 7NEWS.
“I got home and walked through the door and my mom and dad were sobbing. “I had (a) clear set of goals that I wanted to achieve. She was very proud and I continue to be proud.” Questions are now being asked about why the 90-year-old was allowed behind the wheel. She has not been charged.
“This is a tragic incident,” Superintendent Robert Toynton said. “Obviously the accident investigation unit will put together and piece together what happened.” In NSW, those over the age of 85 must pass a driving test every two years.
However, some older drivers may apply for a modified license that allows them to drive in familiar local areas. This modified license does not require a trial. “They are not hateful feelings,” Ovindi said. “It’s just, how can a 90-year-old woman be allowed to drive?”
