On Wednesday, October 5, a former student opened fire in a college building, killing a professor. A shooting occurred around 2:00 p.m. m. in the John W Harshbarger Building on the main campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. The university was closed for more than an hour before the suspect was taken into custody.
The University confirmed in a statement that one person was killed in the shooting. The victim was later identified by the Tucson Sentinel as Professor Thomas Meixner, 52, head of the university’s Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. State police apprehended the suspect, 46-year-old Murad Dervish, at approximately 5:00 p.m. m. on Interstate 8 in Gila Bend, which is more than 100 miles from campus.

Incident Detail
Prior to the incident, UA police received a call from a person inside the building saying that a former student was there without authorization and requesting that police come and remove him. AU police received a second call that shots had been fired as they approached the building. According to Tucson.com, UA Police Chief Paula Balafas said, “Someone recognized the student and knew that he was not allowed to enter the building.”
Dervish had left the building when the police arrived a couple of minutes later. A man was seen being taken from the building to an ambulance and taken to Banner University Medical Center, where doctors later pronounced him dead, according to Tucson.com. During the attack, a University of Arizona faculty member who was present in the building reported hearing between seven and ten shots fired into the socket.
Students, faculty and staff were instructed to take cover for more than an hour after the shooting. A campus police bulletin indicated the lockdown ended around 3:30 p.m. The institution urged employees and students to leave campus or stay in their dorms for the remainder of Wednesday, Oct. 5, because classes were cancelled.
Prior to this incident, a New York professor was fired as a result of a petition created by students. Maitland Jones Jr, a well-known experimental chemist and professor at New York University, was fired as a result of a petition from students who complained that his course and his exams were too challenging. A total of 82 of the 350 students in Jones’s organic chemistry class signed the petition, blaming his techniques for their low grades.
