Thomas Lopez Incident Detail

Lopez will be compelled to serve 85% of his sentence, or slightly over 15 years, because of the gravity of his violent conduct, according to the court’s order. In addition to the enhancements for being a habitual criminal, Lopez was facing a potential sentence of 18 years for kidnapping, 15 years for murder, and 364 days for dodging.

According to the prosecution, on February 24, 2022, Roosevelt County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from Roosevelt General Hospital regarding a woman who was later identified as Calderon. According to the hospital, Calderon had been “kidnapped, beaten, battered, and struck with a golf club multiple times.”

According to the statement, “the victim later passed away from her injuries that were acquired when Lopez beat her with the golf club.” Further information about the gruesome crime was revealed by court documents obtained by ABC station KAMC. According to the documents, it was Lopez who dropped Calderon off at the hospital and informed the nurses that she had fallen down the steps.

Calderon reportedly told medical personnel that Lopez had been “beating her with golf clubs, biting her on the ear, and punching her with clinched fists” while she was groggy and intermittently conscious. Before things got bad, the two had been in a “on and off relationship for the previous year.”

Calderon told police that Lopez had been preventing her from leaving his Roosevelt Road 6 home for the past month or so, and eventually wouldn’t even “let her leave a room,” according to KAMC. Calderon reportedly told authorities that Lopez was able to block her from calling her father because he had installed audio and video surveillance equipment in the home’s vents as the situation worsened.

Police claim that after beating her, he strangled her with a lamp lead while saying “Shut up.” You brought this upon yourself. Calderon reportedly told authorities that Lopez forced her inside a barn on the property and chained her to a chair inside as a final act of brutality. He then started punching her in the head, according to KAMC, before taking a golf club and repeatedly hitting her “with full power.”

She apparently managed to leave only when another lady reportedly succeeded in persuading Lopez that he needed to take Calderon to the hospital. Then, Calderon “succumbed to the injuries that were received by Lopez assaulting her with the golf club,” according to the prosecution. Lopez was allegedly hiding behind a ventilation shaft inside the house on Roosevelt Road 6 when police arrived to arrest him.

Lopez pleaded guilty to multiple violent felonies, but the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to queries from Law&Crime asking about the sentence’s seeming leniency. Lopez’s solicitor, Megan Mitsunaga, revealed in an email to Law&Crime that she and her client came to an agreement with the prosecution for the 18-year sentence following “long negotiations.”

She also disputed that Lopez’s use of the golf club to beat Calderon resulted in her death, claiming that medical professionals failed to treat the victim correctly. Matsunaga stated: “Ms. Calderon was not beaten to death in this affair; she sustained soft tissue injuries that were treatable, but regrettably she did not receive the treatment her injuries asked for.Another reason that I believe lessened his final sentence was the fact that my client took her to the hospital for treatment.
