A 15-year-old girl in Hawaii who had been reported missing was found thanks in part to two good Samaritans who offered to help. Mikella DeBina was reportedly abducted near Anaehoomalu Bay between 13:30 and 14:20 on Friday 16 September. The girl’s aunt, Laurene Debina, told KGMB that a kidnapper approached Mikella and her boyfriend at a beach on Friday. She allegedly used the knife to force Mikella to join him in tying up and blindfolding her boyfriend.
Mikella’s mother said her daughter convinced her alleged kidnapper, later identified as Duncan Kealoha Mahi, 52, to take her to look for food. Once they got to a restaurant, Mikella tried to sneak away from her kidnapper. Bridge Hartman, a host at the restaurant, witnessed Mikella try to sneak away before her kidnapper caught up with her again. Hartman said that he sensed something was wrong with the duo.

“Something is wrong,” Hartman said. “Even if it wasn’t her, my brain was like, ‘I need to catch her.'”Fortunately, Mr. Hartman learned that Mikella was missing after an Amber Alert was issued on Friday and recognized who she was and what was going on. “I thought, ‘Wait, what’s going on?’ She just wasn’t connecting,” he said. “Then, I realized it was her. And I yelled, ‘That’s the girl. That’s the AMBER Alert girl.'”
Once he realized who she was, he rushed over to help. “She was away from him for, like, a brief moment,” Hartman said. “And I was able to catch her in time. And I hurried her into the back of our restaurant.” Hartman was helped by another helpful hero, Kori Takaki, according to his mother. Ms. Takaki said that she was eating at the restaurant when she noticed that the girl was wearing men’s clothing that did not fit her.
She sprang into action just as Mr. Hartman was struggling to get Mikella away from her kidnapper. “It all happened so fast, where he was bringing her, and he said, ‘This is her. This is her’. And I was like, ‘Oh my God!’” Ms. Takaki told KHON. After Mikella was safely separated and moved to a back room of the restaurant, Ms. Takaki stayed with the girl until she was able to contact the police and her parents.
“She seemed really scared,” Takaki said. “She was shaking. But she seemed, I mean, as good as she could imagine. Mikella and Mr. Hartman gave witness statements to police, who used the identifying information to search for suspects. A few hours later, local police located a man they believed matched the description they had been given and arrested Mr. Mahi. Hartman told police that Mahi was allegedly trying to convince everyone in the restaurant that the girl was his daughter.
