On January 17, 2023, Leevon Smith was fatally shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer after he allegedly attempted to grab the officer’s gun. Surveillance footage of the encounter released this month captured off-duty Chicago police warning Smith and saying he would kill him moments before firing three rounds, fatally wounding him at the scene. He died two days later at the hospital.
Multiple outlets reported that the officer intercepted an apparent robbery in front of the building. She was placed on routine 30-day administrative duties after Smith succumbed to his injuries two days after he was rushed to a hospital.
Leevon Smith’s family is suing the city and the off-duty officer for $10 million over the incident. The officer has yet to be charged, though prosecutors charged Smith with attempted robbery and aggravated assault prior to his death.
