On Monday, March 27, 2023, a shooter entered the Nashville Christian academy and shot and killed Katherine Koonce, the principal of Covenant Elementary School. Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old transgender woman and former Covenant Elementary School student, stormed through the school doors early on Monday, killing three students and three teachers before being shot dead by the arriving police officers.
Officials revealed that 60-year-old school administrator Katherine Koonce was one of the six people who died in the mass shooting in Nashville hours after it occurred. Apparently appointed as The Covenant School’s principal in April 2016, Koonce is a native of Baton Rogue and an LSU alumnus.

After the shooting at the Covenant School, authorities revealed that six people had died, including Katherine Koonce, the school’s principal. Katherine Koonce had previously worked at Nashville’s Christ Presbyterian Academy as the director of learning services and academic dean.
According to the school’s website, the Covenant Presbyterian Church launched The Covenant School in 2001. When Katherine Koonce’s identity was announced as one of the victims, the community immediately flooded social media with condolence posts, praising the martyr as a devout Christian who loved her kids.
While Koonce served as the dean of Nashville’s Christ Presbyterian Academy, the parent of a student who attended the school at the time, Diane Button, told PEOPLE that the educator was a cherished friend who constantly sought to give back to the community.
Cancer survivor Diane added that Koonce watched out for her family’s welfare and supported them during the diagnosis. She uttered: Reverend Michael Edmundson wrote on Twitter that he had the honour of worshipping with Koonce the day before the victim was assassinated. He continued:
Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, three nine-year-old kids, have been identified as the three victims of the incident. Cynthia Peak, a school substitute teacher, and Michael Hill, a janitor at the Christian academy, were named as the other two staff members. Police observed that although the shooting was a premeditated act, the victims were not the suspect’s intended target.
