Christopher Gonzalez Incident Detail

Police said he was not a suspect or a person of interest at the time of the killings. The police never questioned him while he lived in Toronto. At the time of his arrest, Sutherland was living in Moosonee, Ontario. Moosonee is a small northern city near James Bay, which is the southern end of Hudson Bay, and is approximately 850 kilometers north  of Toronto.

Det. Sergeant Stephen Smith, the lead investigator in the case, said Monday morning that Sutherland has moved throughout the province over the past 39 years, but did not specify where else he lived. Smith said there was “no problem” in apprehending Sutherland, adding that “when you commit these crimes, you’re just waiting for a knock on the door.”

Smith confirmed that Sutherland has family and extended family, who also live in northern Ontario, but did not provide details on who exactly they are. Sutherland was arrested after police said he was using genetic genealogy technology from US company Othram Inc., a private lab that he said “helps investigators break through previously impenetrable forensic DNA barriers and close previously hopeless cases.” ”.

“It’s a snip test, a single nucleotide polymorphism, which allows us to use genes between genes to have family connectivity, and we can use that to use people who have uploaded their DNA to Family Tree DNA,” Smith said. he said.

Investigators were eventually led to Sutherland and served with a DNA warrant. They said the evidence matched what was found at crime scenes decades ago. Police said that without this technology, they would never have come across Sutherland’s name.

Smith said that because Sutherland has been living in Ontario for 39 years since the murders, investigators will look into “every possible connection” to any other unsolved cases. He said this case was probably the “most complex” job he had done in 25 years working for the Toronto police.

Smith said Sutherland has family and extended family who live in northern Ontario, but did not provide details on who exactly they are. Sutherland has been charged with two counts of first degree murder and is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on December 9 at 2 p.m.
