A newlywed couple has been embroiled in a controversy after the owner of a wedding venue accused them of getting a free service. Town House Durham have alleged that Joanne and Claire Nattrass “stole” their business by failing to pay hotel bills, forcing them to call the police.

The company reportedly took the matter to social media and publicly criticized the duo. In a Facebook post, the Town House hotel in Durham said: “Never in a million years did we think we’d have to do this, but this is Joanne and Claire. Joanne and Claire think it’s okay not to pay, in times as tough as they are for business, they’ve made the decision to steal our business. They asked our staff over and over again if they could pay at checkout for the wedding as they don’t get paid until this date. So we gave them the benefit of the doubt because we know times are tough.”

“So they held a wedding at our hotel, allowed us to rack up huge food costs, and then leave without paying. and asked them to pay, they just REFUSED. Therefore, we are trying to find the address to send them legal correspondence, as we will not let this go. Times and expenses are too difficult not to seek this money! If these people work for you or you know of them, please contact them so we can try to get our money back,” he added.

In the post’s response, Joanne claimed: “This hotel post completely ruined our wedding day, we are devastated to be accused of refusing to pay the bill as if we were some kind of scammer. The only parts of the bill we refuse to pay are £200 for the evening buffet and corkage for the wine we brought. We were promised ribs and mini burgers and they didn’t have either and the food was removed. after half an hour with many of our guests without eating”.

Joanne added that there were supposed to be no corkage charges, claiming that Durham Trading Standards is currently investigating the establishment based on her complaint. “On Monday, people from the hotel showed up on our floor. We were terrified and called the police to say that we were under threat. The rest of the invoice will be paid at the end of this week once we have received the payment. This was always the arrangement from day one. Being treated like this is absolutely appalling,” Joanne said.

But the hotel did not back down when hotel manager Luke Hay responded: “They refused to pay anything and left a £1,150 bill. They claimed they had paid a deposit of £800, but our documents show they only paid £400, so they actually owe us £1,550. All your complaints are nonsense. They were aware of the corkage charge and that we would not be able to provide them with their mini burgers and ribs. It was agreed beforehand that there would be replacements for those items and they were happy with that.”

Hay added that the incident had left them frustrated. “Weddings at our venue normally cost around £5,000, but we helped this couple out because we felt sorry for them. They’ve already seen it canceled and have been regulars here, so they ended up having a deeply discounted wedding. It worked out.” at £16 a head for a three course meal, you could barely get that at McDonald’s, and they still left without paying. It’s so sad when you’ve tried so hard to help people that this is the result.” he said.

“Hotel staff came to your floor to establish your address and formally request the money you owe us, there were no threats and it was in no way a threatening situation. They called the police making all sorts of inaccurate accusations, which was a waste of the police’s time. We just want the bill to be paid,” Hay added.
