Jasmine R. Miller Incident Detail

About an hour after the fire started, detectives from the county sheriff’s office came and started looking for Miller, who is accused of starting the fire before snatching her daughter and running away from the scene on foot. Her then-boyfriend, whose name was omitted from the story, supposedly owned the residence.

The Journal claimed that according to investigators, Miller caused the fire as a result of a dispute with her boyfriend that started the evening of March 29 about her attendance at a casino. Miller allegedly texted her boyfriend during the dispute, threatening to “drive her shit truck through [her house] to her.”

The boyfriend reported Miller to the sheriff’s office out of fear that she was being serious. Officers detained Miller as she was leaving the casino and charged her with operating a car without a licence as a direct result of her report. On March 30, Miller’s boyfriend was there to pick her up from jail. The two are said to have argued while Miller blamed him for her detention.

Miller reportedly said she would pack up her belongings and move into her mother’s house before they went back to the house. According to the Journal, Miller then started putting some of her items into trash bags and starting loading them into her boyfriend’s truck. Miller’s boyfriend reported smelling smoke while she was loading the vehicle, and when he went inside to look, he discovered that all of the clothing in her closet were on fire.

According to the affidavit, “He observed that her clothes [that she was wearing] were hanging on racks on the north wall were on fire.” The partner reportedly challenged Miller for a short while before making sure there were no kids or dogs around. Miller is said to have left the scene on foot while her infant daughter was being searched inside the house.

Miller’s boyfriend admitted to having butane lighters at the home, which he used to use methamphetamine and possibly to start the fire, during an interview with detectives. Investigators discovered a bag with two butane lighters and casino player cards in Miller’s name in a backyard a few homes away from her boyfriend’s home.

The fire’s origin was “an open flame that penetrated clothing,” according to an investigator with the White River Township Fire Department, who ruled that it was “incendiary” in nature. According to jail records, Miller was arrested and lodged at the Johnson County Jail, where she is currently being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
