Gabrielle “Gaby” Assouline, the disabled woman who claimed to have been paralyzed after falling from her wheelchair while disembarking a Southwest flight, has died after struggling for 11 months in hospital. The family stated that she was thrown from the airline gangway after her staff refused to help her.

Speaking of her daughter, who was an active person before the tragic plane incident, she recalled that she had to be fed with a feeding tube and lost the ability to speak.
At the time, she Sandra said: “The fear and pain that she shows in her eyes when she wakes up in those brief moments of clarity is too much to bear.” Assouline’s rare condition called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) turned her muscle tissue into bone and affected her mobility.

In court documents, Southwest contended that the disabled woman did not request help, but rather refused it. However, the use of a wheelchair was formally requested along with the help of staff to get around the airport, her mother reported, the Daily Mail reported.
Following Assouline’s death, Southwest Airlines acknowledged and issued a statement. “Southwest offers its deepest condolences to Ms. Assouline’s family, friends and all the lives she touched. We have a commitment of more than 51 years to the care of our People and Clients and we continue to be committed to the parties involved,” the statement read.
“Gaby’s life was tragically cut short 11 months ago, but she put up the biggest fight with grace, friends, laughter, and the strong belief that she would be leaving the hospital and coming home very soon,” the GoFundMe page reads about how she expected the family. She asked him to come home before her condition began to worsen, adding: “Unfortunately, complications robbed Gaby of that ending.”
