Prosecutors accuse Erica Baez, a mother from the Bronx, of letting her kid drown in a hotel pool while she ate at a bar and drank cocktails. She also left her infant, who was five months old, alone in the room while she drank. On allegations of second-degree manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the unfortunate occurrence that happened at a Marriott hotel in Melville on January 13, 2022, Erica Baez was and is still being held without bail.
According to Suffolk County prosecutors, young Katlyn, who spent more than a year of her life after the incident, passed away on May 1. The jailed woman, her boyfriend, her daughter, age 7, and son, age 5, all stayed at the hotel, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Her boyfriend left for work the day of the tragedy, and at 3:30 in the afternoon he requested that the hotel personnel open the indoor pool.

The staff cautioned him that since there was no lifeguard on duty, he would have to look after his daughter. Báez, on the other hand, left her son alone in the hotel room while her daughter spent 30 minutes playing in the pool and her mother went to the hotel bar. She left for a second cocktail after that, and when she came back 30 minutes later, Katlyn was “floating lifelessly in the pool,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
Baez took some time to remove her shoes and socks and lay her phone down next to her after witnessing her daughter Baez drown. When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Baez lied to them, saying that he had only left the youngster alone for five minutes. After she arrived, the paramedics were able to revive Katlyn. However, due to oxygen deprivation and permanent brain injury, the young woman was had to live on a ventilator, according to the prosecution.
Katlyn eventually developed an abscess and passed away on May 1st, 2023. Mother of the victim, who was detained on May 15, entered a not guilty plea. “This defendant is accused of acting in a cruel, careless, and selfish manner. Little Katlyn’s brief life was cut short too soon, and we will do all in our power to see that justice is done,” stated District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
