They stated on Facebook: “Cleveland Independent School District is devastated to learn of the passing of one of our pupils. We are unable to provide any details at this time because the terrible incident is still being investigated. Dr. Hodge, the director of social emotional learning and PBIS for Cleveland ISD, has informed all crisis counsellors that they are available this weekend for any staff or students who require them.
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, all of our counsellors will be prepared and available. If a counsellor is required, we have instructed our employees to speak with their principal or department leader as soon as possible. The families and members of the community affected by this terrible event are in our thoughts and prayers.
Cleveland ISD will take all necessary precautions, procedures, and activities to aid and protect all of our children and staff at this time. According to Today, Oropesa allegedly started shooting at his neighbours when one of them complained that the noise of the gunfire was keeping their baby awake. “So we went and told the man to please stop shooting, or go continue shooting further away from the house,” the boy’s father said when describing the events.
He replied, however, that he was on his land and free to do as he pleased. “When we entered, my wife was speaking with the police, and we made five calls because he was getting angrier. When we saw him, he had cocked his gun as he was leaving his property. He cocked his gun, and I advised my wife to get inside because he might come and threaten us.
So my wife told me, ‘You go inside, I don’t think he will fire at me because I’m a woman, I’ll stay here at the door,’ according to CNN. But as Oropesa approached their house, he shot the boy’s mother in the doorway before killing the youngster, age 9, and three other people, Diana Velazquez Alvarado, age 21, Julisa Molina Rivera, age 31, and Jose Jonathan Casarez, age 18.
