Clare Duffy, a mother of two, was going to take a nap with a sore shoulder and had asked her husband to wake her if she fell asleep. That was the last time her husband, Richard, saw her alive as she died in her sleep. When he went to check on her, she was unresponsive and did not respond to any of her attempts to wake her up.
Richard quickly called emergency services, hoping they could help, but to no avail. Duffy, 41, was pronounced dead on Sunday, January 8. “I was emotionally distraught,” Richard, 38, told the Manchester Evening News. “Was screaming. I ran to my daughter’s room and called emergency services directly. She doesn’t feel real, but everything feels blurry. It happened very quickly,” he said.

It later emerged that Duffy had died of a pulmonary embolism. Duffy and Richard have two children, Harry, 16, and Alice, 15. Duffy’s mother, Catherine, also died on December 19, 2022, just over a month ago. “[Catherine’s death] is still under investigation,” Richard said, adding: “It was a huge shock.
She hadn’t been well for a while and was on a lot of painkillers. [Clare] was spending a lot of time with her mother, she had to pass in front of her house to get to work, so I saw her every day.” Duffy was well-liked by her family, friends and colleagues and she has been described as a “beautiful, wonderful, bubbly” person who was “liked by everyone”. “
Everyone she met loved her,” Richard said, adding: “Her family of hers was her main interest. Any spare time she spent with her daughter, her son, her nieces or nephews. She was very family oriented.” Duffy and Richard’s tenth wedding anniversary was just around the corner, before her untimely death.
Her children are now struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of her beloved mother. “My son is still closed. He was worse for my daughter. While she was on the phone with the paramedics, her room was right next door. She heard everything that was going on,” Richard said.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Duffys with funeral proceedings. “I am humbly asking for a little help in giving Clare and her mother the send-off they deserve and I am in the process of trying to do this. I know Clare and Cath were loved by many of the people they met in their eventful lives and I look forward to proving that once again,” the fundraiser read.
Shortly after, Richard posted an update to the page, providing details about the funeral service and thanking those who had contributed to his fundraiser. “Hello everyone, we now have a date for Clare and Cath’s funeral. It will be held at Peel Green Crematorium on Tuesday, February 14 at 1:40 p.m. m.
There will be a small wake at the Dutton Pub on Barton Rd, Eccles afterwards. I cannot thank you enough for the love, warmth and help I have received from all of you. It all means more than you could ever know,” the fundraiser update read.
