After being shot by police on Thursday night after allegedly shooting his neighbour and engaging them in gunfire, an 81-year-old Richmond man is now in custody. After an hour-long standoff that resulted in a gunfight with the police, Charles Adams was named by the Indiana State Police as the suspect in custody.
Just before three o’clock in the afternoon, Richmond police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of Rich Road. They discovered a 42-year-old Richmond lady who had been shot when they got there. She was taken to Reid Health from the scene with non-life-threatening wounds. Adams, the woman’s neighbour next door, allegedly trapped himself inside her house and resisted police requests for a statement.

An hour-long standoff started after that.According to Scott Keegan, Indiana State Police Public Information Officer, “Adams reportedly fired shots at police at some point during law enforcement’s attempts to de-escalate the situation,” in a statement updated Friday morning. Three SWAT teams then attempted to remove Adams from his home gently, but when he refused to call the police, officers had to inject gas into the house.
Adams allegedly waved a gun at SWAT personnel when they entered the house to locate him. At that point, he was shot at least once by SWAT personnel. When Adams was arrested and taken to Reid Health, News Centre 7 was on the scene. Keegan claimed he suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
Master Trooper George True, Senior Trooper Nickolas Yaeger, Trooper Dana Harvey, Senior Trooper Jason Madison, and Senior Trooper Brandon Henderson were the SWAT squad members that shot Adams, according to the Indiana State Police. While the inquiry is being done, everyone has been put on administrative leave.
