The body found inside a bullet-riddled car outside of downtown Baton Rouge has been identified as Allison Rice, a student at Louisiana State University (LSU). Police said that during the early hours of Friday, September 16, the student’s vehicle was shot at at least “five or six” times. The victim’s car was found near the train tracks on Government Street, which is close to Eddie Robinson Drive, the Baton Rouge Police Department told WAFB. She was alone in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Louisiana State University released a statement about Rice’s death expressing sadness and asking students to help police if they have any information about the shooting. “The LSU community is saddened to hear that Senior Allison Rice was murdered overnight. Her family and friends are in our thoughts, and we encourage anyone who may have further information about this crime to contact Baton Rouge police,” she said.

Witnesses say Rice was stopped at a railroad crossing in the 1500 block of Government Street around 2:20 am. When the LSU student tried to make a U-turn, she was hit by a volley of bullets. Floyd Normand, the local resident, told WWL: “We have a lot of problems here, you know what I mean. You have people doing things that they should be doing, things like that. I’m trying to stay focused, stay out of that life and stay home. When night falls, I try to be at home.”

Rice had attended Dutchtown High School, and the principal, Matthew Monceaux, also released a statement on her death: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Allison Rice, who graduated from Dutchtown High School in 2019. Our Hearts go out to her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her. We will have counselors available to help our school community deal with this sad loss. If your child wants to talk to a counselor, encourage him or her to seek help from a teacher or counselor.”

Rice worked at a barbecue restaurant, The Shed, located near campus. One of her co-workers said that she was lively and always wore a smile. The restaurant’s co-owner, Luke Forstmann, also reacted: “Her whole life ahead of her,” she added, “she was very proud of an internship and graduating. She was an amazing girl with a lot ahead of her.”

The statement released by the University also issued a student helpline number on Rice’s murder: “Any of your friends and classmates who want to talk to someone about this or need help processing this loss can contact the Helpline.” Mental Health at the Student Health Center. (225-578-8774).”
