CARROLLTON, GEORGIA – Richard Sigman, a professor at the University of West Georgia, has been fired following his arrest on suspicion of killing a student on Saturday, July 30. He was also charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Anna Jones, 18, was shot as she was sitting in a parked car, according to the victim’s name.

Authorities with the Carrollton Police Department say the 47-year-old professor got into a verbal altercation with another boy at an Italian restaurant. According to authorities, the other man told security that Sigman had threatened to shoot him. When restaurant security noticed that Sigman was carrying a firearm, they asked him to leave. Sigman then left and went to a parking lot, where he allegedly opened fire on a parked car, killing Jones inside, according to police.

“According to the investigation, Sigman entered the parking lot and began shooting at a parked car, striking the victim. Her friends immediately took her to the hospital, where her death was later confirmed. “On Facebook, Carrollton Police posted something. “This investigation is still ongoing. The Carrollton Police Department encourages anyone with information to get in touch.” Sigman was listed as “currently booked” in Carroll County Jail web records as of Sunday noon, according to CNN. The amount of the bonus was not specified. It was not clear if Sigman was represented by an attorney.

Jones has just received his high school diploma. Nearby Mount Zion High School posted a message on Facebook saying, “Anna loved this school and this city and will be missed by many.” “Please keep her family and friends in her prayers as they go through this difficult time,” was the request. On Saturday, the president of the University of West Georgia issued a statement. President Dr. Brendan Kelly announced, according to Law & Crime, “The University of West Georgia has learned of the loss of one of its students, Anna Jones, who passed away suddenly following an off-campus incident earlier today.”

“Richard Sigman’s employment with UWG has been terminated, and the Carrollton Police Department, which is in charge of this ongoing investigation, and UWG continue to cooperate. We would like to express our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends on behalf of the university,” Kelly stated. “Anna was a lovely, kind and kind person and I will always miss her. No one could list every single positive trait out there. She was a wonderful friend to everyone and always so upbeat, according to her friend Ethan Lepard, who spoke to the New York Post.
