A teenager pleaded guilty to a downgraded manslaughter charge after fatally striking a pregnant woman in the head with a piece of concrete. Ms. Miller, 30, died in hospital from her injuries three days later. She was five months pregnant at the time and she lost her unborn child.
The 17-year-old appeared at Perth Children’s Court on Wednesday over the November 29 incident, where police allege he hit Diane Miller over the head with a piece of concrete as she sat in her car in the parking lot of Karawara’s Waterford Plaza, just south of Perth’s CBD. Miller, 30, died at the hospital from her injuries three days later.

She was five months pregnant at the time and lost her unborn child. Initially, the 17-year-old was charged with grievous bodily harm, but after Ms. Miller’s death, that was upgraded to murder. The charge was then dropped at the boy’s court appearance Wednesday, and prosecutors accepted her guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The court was told the boy, who cannot be identified, was diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in 2020. He will face a two-day sentencing hearing beginning April 27. He cannot be held legally responsible for the death of Mrs. Miller’s unborn child.
