The devastated parents of a young mother were shocked to learn that their “effervescent and popular” daughter had used cocaine before dying in her sleep. Holly Dakin, 29, passed away earlier this year after a sudden heart attack. An inquest into her death has heard investigators say she was possibly due to heart-related illness. However, the disturbing update surprised Holly’s parents, Robert and Rosemary Dakin, who spoke out after the coroner’s report declared her daughter’s death “drug-related”.

The beleaguered parents attended the Nottingham inquest with their daughter’s boyfriend and close friends, telling Nottinghamshire Live that “none of us had a clue”. Robert called her daughter “bubbly and everyone’s fun friend,” adding, “She was popular. She lived in Wilford with her four kids.” Holly’s boyfriend, Aaron White, 41, was living with her and her children at the time of her death. He described her as “amazing, caring, kind, an amazing mother and girlfriend.” He continued: “We were happy as a family. We went to Egypt on vacation and came back for four weeks and then went to Turkey. We had a good relationship. She didn’t do drugs. She went to the wrong place that night. The drug use that night was something unique.” We had planned for her on the 30th.”
The investigation was ordered due to an unnatural aspect of Holly’s death after she found cocaine in her system and the potential impact it had on her heart. Toxicology tests showed the 29-year-old victim had less than twice the legal alcohol limit in her system to drive a car, along with cocaine and a product often used to dilute cocaine. However, the amount of cocaine ingested was not considered toxic. The tests showed that the “balance of probabilities” that led to the “sudden cardiac event” was an irregular heartbeat. The inquest heard how the left side of her heart failed due to a blood clot in the main artery that feeds blood to the heart.
The young mother of four had recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University and spent most of the day before her passing with a friend of hers. They reportedly drank, ate, planned a vacation and even visited a tanning salon. Holly then stayed at her youngest child’s father’s house after visiting her address later. The next morning, around 8 a.m. m., the father of the younger girl tried to wake Holly up, but found that she was not breathing and immediately called an ambulance.
Chris McGrath, a close friend of Holly’s, told the inquest that he spoke to her just hours before the tragedy and that he sounded jovial and happy. Meanwhile, Detective Constable Ben Grayson, of the Radford Road CID and the officer in the case, said at the hearing: “From our point of view, in terms of the police investigation, it doesn’t seem to suggest that Holly didn’t take what she took. “. of her own free will, so it does prevent a police investigation into it.” Coroner Bower noted that there was evidence of alcohol and cocaine in the victim’s system and that it did not appear to be the first time she had taken the drug.
