The 1997 Kentucky school shooting is back in the news as 39-year-old Michael Adam Carneal now has a chance at parole after 25 years. At age 14, Carneal shot three of his classmates at Heath High School and wounded five others in West Paducah on Dec. 1, 1997, then turned himself and the gun over to the school principal. The 14-year-old was serving a life sentence and was booked on three counts of murder for shooting his roommates Nicole Hadley, 17, Jessica James, 17, and Kayce Steger, 15, and five counts of attempted murder.
Carneal is now scheduled for a two-day parole hearing beginning Monday, Sept. 19, after 25 years, the maximum prison sentence allowed for someone his age. The hearing will be held via Zoom, the two parts of the hearing will first carry out testimonies from the victims who survived the shooting and close relatives of those who were killed and in the second part, Carneal will speak with the freedom board parole who will then make a decision about your release. One of the victims after hearing the news of his parole said, “It’s not right for him to lead a normal life.”

On the day of the gruesome murder, Carneal headed to Heath High School with her sister, arriving at approximately 7:45 am. He placed a loaded semi-automatic rifle inside a blanket while passing it off for a school art project he was working on. He then allegedly fired ten rounds and fatally shot his companions. Micheal is believed to have dropped the weapon of his own volition before turning it over to the school principal.
Missy Jenkins Smith was one of the victims shot in the bloodshed. The incident left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. She now argues that Carneal should not be released and claims that he is still a threat to society. “For him to have a chance at 39. People get married at 39. They have children. It’s not right for him to have a normal life,” she told the Daily Mail.
Missy Jenkins Smith said that she considered Carneal a friend. The two had been in the school marching band together. In 2007, Smith visited Carneal in prison and said he apologized to her and she forgave him, but he still believes he could be a threat if they let him out of jail and is counting down the days until he is eligible for parole.
During Monday’s hearing, which will be held via video call, Smith plans to have the camera in front of her so the parole board can see her wheelchair, “a reminder to everyone who experienced that impact ago.” 25 years old and they’re still dealing with it, for the rest of their lives. A lot of people think that exonerates him from the consequences, but I don’t think so,” Smith said. However, Smith noted that only one victim believes that Carneal should be released from jail but on some form of supervised release.
