A 100-year-old man who died in a hit-and-run in Oakland was identified as Tzu-Ta Ko on Tuesday. In addition, Oakland police released a photo of the suspect vehicle, a Mini Cooper. Ko was fatally struck around 7 a.m. Sunday at 19th and Harrison streets along Lake Merritt. Ko’s daughter, Shirley Ko, told KTVU on Tuesday: “We’re very, very close, so this is really a shock to me.”
She said that her father “enjoys walks. He is quite healthy. So we are very surprised. He walked almost every day.” The victim was a retired Taiwanese government official who celebrated his 100th birthday in November. His wife died in January. “Everyone should learn from him,” said his daughter. “He lived more than 100 years. He exercised, he takes care of himself ”.

Witnesses told police they believe a driver in a brown or white Mini Cooper hit Ko at the intersection and then drove off. The car was last seen heading south by Harrison. The victim was a regular walker from his home in Oakland’s Chinatown.
“Very sad, you know, someone who can live to be 100 years old,” said Carl Chan, president of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce. “Being a senior is pretty sad. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a lot of pedestrian deaths involving our seniors.”
He added: “You should at least have the courtesy to stop, call the police, ask for help. This kind of behavior is not acceptable.” Anyone with information is asked to contact OPD’s Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.
The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
