The second-degree murder charge against Sutton carries a statutory maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, while the conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges carry respective statutory maximums of five and 20 years, the Justice Department said. Sutton’s conviction marked the first time a D.C. police officer has been convicted of murder while in the line of duty for him, CBS affiliate WUSA reported.
