A 58-year-old Michigan man will spend several decades behind bars for killing and dismembering his own father before fleeing the state. Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Paul Bridenstine ordered Scott Sterffy on Monday to serve a sentence of 25 to 50 years in a state penitentiary for the 2021 murder of 82-year-old retired oral surgeon Dr. Thomas Aye, they confirmed. the authorities to Law&Crime.
Judge Bridenstine also sentenced Sterffy to between four and ten years’ imprisonment for mutilation of a corpse, to be served at the same time as the murder sentence. Authorities say that prior to being dismembered, Aye had sustained multiple blunt force trauma and stab wounds to his face, head and body. He too was suffocated. Doctors at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry initially found him incompetent to stand trial, but later determined he was competent, according to a report by Michigan-based media conglomerate MLive.
Portage Police Department detectives said Aye’s body was discovered by one of his daughters around 7 p.m. on July 25, 2021 at his home located in the 5000 block of Glencove Court. Her daughter was reportedly checking on him after she failed to show up for an appointment.
Investigators determined that Sterffy had been staying at his father’s home at the time of the murder and fled the state shortly thereafter. The murder sparked a nationwide manhunt for Sterffy, who was tracked down and arrested in Kalamazoo, Michigan, just days after his father’s death.
“This was a brutal and horrible experience that your father went through,” Bridenstine said, according to the MLive report. But Sterffy reportedly interrupted the presiding judge, interrupting him to deny responsibility for him. “I didn’t do it,” Sterffy allegedly replied. “I didn’t hit him over the head with a hammer, I didn’t cut his face.”
“The court found you liable, Mr. Sterffy,” Judge Bridenstine said. “He can disagree [with] me all he wants, but I found him liable based on all the evidence that was presented.” During the investigation, Sterffy’s sister told police that she believed her brother had stopped taking his mental health medication sometime in 2019, according to the MLive story. Aye’s obituary noted that her son had struggled with such mental health issues.
“He quietly and uncomplainingly bore the burden of his son’s mental illness; he simply wanted his son to feel loved, cared for, and have the chance to live a full life,” the obituary says. “He lived with the sadness of the death of [his wife of his of his] Judy and the illness of his son without thinking that life was unfair. Instead, he leaned on his own difficulties as access to empathy for others, often proving a safe harbor for those in need.
