Linda Rainey, whose husband was killed, remarked, “I relive the night of June 16 over and over and I probably will always.” “My gut tells me the shooter will also keep replaying that evening.” Emory Anthony, Smith’s defence attorney, expressed regret on behalf of his client, saying, “We’re very grateful to the families of each of those victims because they consented to allow him to plead to life.
He might have been sentenced to death. They therefore lived out their faith rather than just proclaiming it. We want to thank each member of the family, even though I know it hurts them all. Anthony and the prosecutor’s office both claimed they didn’t know the reason Smith started shooting that evening. “I think he’s sorry,” Anthony remarked.

In response to a report of an active shooter, police were dispatched to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, one of Alabama’s two largest cities. At the “Boomers Potluck,” which was attended by Smith and about 25 other people, at least one of whom had previously been to the church and dinners, were present.
According to the Rev. Doug Carpenter, who established the church in 1973 and retired in 2005, Smith was seated by himself when a lifelong churchgoer approached him and extended an invitation to sit at a table. He merely introduced himself as “Mr. Smith” to victim Rainey and declined to join them.
According to the authorities, Smith then produced a firearm and shot three victims. A churchgoer named Jim Musgrove struck the gunman with a chair and took the weapon from him. Upon arrival, authorities declared Rainey dead. After being transported to a hospital, Yeager and Pounds passed away.
“This type of senseless murder of three innocent people is certainly a case our office would typically try in front of a jury and seek the death penalty, however, that was not the wish of the three families in this case,” said district attorney Danny Carr. “The families were unanimous that they would prefer a plea of guilty to capital murder and a life without parole sentence after much discussion, thought, and prayer.”
