According to the Office of the Sedgwick County District Attorney, Phoukhong Khamvongsa, a 63-year-old Wichita man accused of attempting to kill his younger brother in a gunshot in his backyard in the Oaklawn neighbourhood last year, was sentenced to 12 years in prison earlier this month.
According to a probable cause document signed by a Sedgwick County judge, Phoukhong informed police that he shot his brother, who was 55 at the time, on April 25, 2022, “because they were bickering about Khamvongsa inviting people over… to perform music.”

Around 5:23 p.m., a shooting took place in the 4500 block of South Meadowview, close to K-15 and 47th South. Khamvongsa left his brother on the ground after the shot, threw the.22-caliber pistol under a TV in his bedroom closet, and exited the house with blood on his face and maybe one hand.
He reported that his sister was in the backyard with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and back to the police officers who arrived in response to a neighbor’s 911 call.
Khamvongsa initially faced a charge of attempted first-degree murder, according to court documents, but on January 27 he pled guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault. On March 17, District Judge Jeffrey Syrios handed down the 144-month sentence.
