Justine M. Johnson Incident Detail
Before being given a sentence, Johnson addressed the court and informed Judge Riffel that she had been using drugs to self-medicate for mental health issues since she was a teenager and that she had killed Mosser.
In courtroom video obtained by MLive, she claims, “I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, bipolar, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), anxiety, and depression at the age of 13.”
She had been off her mental health medicine for a year and was misusing narcotics, such as heroin and methamphetamine, in 2021. Before killing her daughter, Johnson claimed to have been having hallucinations and to have no memory of the mother leaving the child in her care, how long she was with her, or any specifics regarding the death of the child.
She further asserted that she was only made aware of her daughter’s death after the police informed her of what she had done, and that it took her another four months before her medication started to take effect. Johnson stated, “I want everyone to know that I am overcome with regret and wish every day that I could swap places with [my daughter].”
The convicted murderer claimed that she entered a guilty plea and agreed to her punishment because, like “every mother,” she wanted the person who killed her daughter to be held accountable for her crimes. Every mother wants justice. Johnson stated, “I also want Sutton to receive justice.
“I anticipate receiving the same punishment as everyone else if I was the murderer. It is what is ideal for her. I love you, Sutton Marie,” Johnson concluded, urging reporters to treat her daughter with “the grace and respect she deserves.” James A. Bacarella, the county solicitor for Iosco, spoke before the court and said the crime scene was one he “couldn’t imagine seeing in over 30 years as a lawyer,” according to MLive.
It was something quite sneaky. I find it difficult to understand how someone could intentionally kill a 3-year-old child, let alone a little toddler. Yet, I cannot see why her mother would kill him, Bacarella stated. Instead, her mother decided to knife her 17-year-old.
Her mother instead decided to knife her 17 times. I’m not sure if you can make sense of that. I’m not sure how you’ll bounce back from that. There is no way that I am aware of for someone to change after that. Her woman mercilessly destroyed the most defenceless life that was given to her.
