Cheshire Police said Nathaniel Ritchie, was speeding when he collided with another car driven by Lakshmi Basford, 46, in December 2019. Miss Basford died at the scene at Macclesfield Road in North Rode.

Ritchie of Prestwich was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at Chester Crown Court.

Police said Ritchie went on the A536 to buy soft drinks and realized that the shop he was going to was likely to close.Power turned around and sped off on a left turn, veered across the carriageway and crashed into Miss Basford’s car, he said.

PC Nick Anderton, who led the investigation, said: “Christmas Day is a time to be with your family and celebrate.

“Unfortunately, Lakshmi’s family will never experience this again due to Ritchie’s reckless behavior.”He said he hopes knowing that Ritchie is behind bars will give Lakshmi’s family “some comfort” as they “continue to deal with the devastating aftermath of this heartbreaking incident”.

After the sentence, Ms. Lakshmi’s family said that no sentence “could reflect the loss that we continue to suffer”.

“Lakshmi was such a beautiful, kind and gentle lady, she had many years to live. “Our lives will never be the same and we miss him terribly.”
