According to police documents and a newly released interview by the New Mexico State Police, a 17-year-old UNM student played a key role in luring NMSU basketball player Mike Peake onto the UNM campus on November 19. . Although the 17-year-old student is being charged in this case, Action 7 News is not identifying her due to her age. The teenager herself said:
“It’s a bit off-putting because I feel like I never would have called Michael here last night. . Brandon would still be alive and you wouldn’t have this problem.” During the police interview, she told police she first saw Peake in October at the UNM-NMSU rivalry football game in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

“So ever since then we’ve been talking back and forth and we like when he got here she said she of course he wanted to have sex. Yeah, that’s what we’re going to do,” the teen said. She says her friend Brandon Travis pressured her into setting up Peake in retaliation for a fight that occurred weeks earlier at the UNM vs. NMSU football game.
The night she lured Peake to campus, she at first said that she didn’t know who attacked Peake. The investigator asked, “So, you know, who were these guys that pulled you over?” to which she replied, “No, I don’t.” That’s when the officers tell her they know she’s lying, then she starts her story from the beginning.
She said: “All I saw was Brandon. I walked up to him with a gun pointed at his face and Michael did this. That’s the last thing I saw when I ran. IT’S OKAY. Because I saw the gun. I didn’t know there was a weapon involved. IT’S OKAY. That’s why I ran.”
In the police interview, the teen says things weren’t supposed to escalate. “I thought they were jumping it because, like I said, I heard the noise. So that’s why I stood there for a second. I didn’t know it was gunshots,” the teen said. He then tells the investigators how she feels guilty about setting Peake up.
“He was good. He’s like, I feel so fucking bad. And now that my friend Brandon is dead, I feel like I’m the reason he’s dead,” she said. The teen is currently facing charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy.
