A man has paid a unique digital tribute to his late father by developing a QR code for his headstone that allows cemetery visitors to learn more about his interesting life. A spark of inspiration struck Michael Bourque, 55, an engineer and inventor from Melrose, Massachusetts, as he mourned the loss of his father, John Harold Bourque, who died in April 2017 at the age of 87.
“When someone dies, they put a marker on the ground before buying the stone. I thought, ‘God, no one is going to see this. John Harold Bourque, the fifth and youngest son, joined the US Army in 1951 for the Korean War after being born in Melrose during the Great Depression. The atomic veteran, who was a carpenter by trade, also built houses that broke apart during nuclear tests at Camp Desert Rock in Nevada.
“He had to hide in a bunker in the ground while they exploded this atomic weapon,” his son explained. “So his job was to go back inside and see the destruction that he had caused,” he said. Bourque described John as a “great father” who fostered his interest in invention and engineering. “
We grew up poor, and my father was too cheap to pay someone to fix anything. So I was that little kid holding the flashlight while we fixed everything,” he said. “My dad taught me everything from plumbing to electrical to carpentry, and I credit my dad for much of my creativity and innovative manufacturing skills.”

In his later years, the self-described futurist recalled how his father had helped him start his cannabis vaping business.
