Incident Detail
Commenting on it, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a press conference on Tuesday, Oct. 11, “They were taking a hat, a $3 hat, a 50-cent item on the site. They heat-sealed it on the hat and sell (the) hat for $300.” Adding to this, Nassau County Prosecutor Anne Donnelly said: ”
This was a sophisticated operation. A store that you could have walked by hundreds of times and not even realize what was inside was thousands and thousands of dollars in counterfeit products”. In addition to owning a boutique, Castelli also allegedly ran the scam through a private Facebook group called Shop Linnys, which has around 5,000 members.
Once approved to join, shoppers were bombarded with statuses of what she said were designer products as she encouraged them to buy them, Bounce Nation reports. Reacting to the bust, shopper Carole Rutkovsky said, “Totally betrayed, you walk in expecting you’re buying as advertised and that you’re buying quality.”
On the other hand, some said they know when it’s a knockoff. “I think if you’re shopping here at that kind of store, you’re hoping you’re not buying a whole real Gucci bag,” one woman was quoted as saying by CBS. A conviction for trademark counterfeiting is punishable by a sentence of one to three years.
Castelli, a mother of four, was released on an appearance ticket and is due back in court next month, on November 2, at the First District Court in Hempstead, Knews reports.
