Joseph Kromelis, 75, was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. He was a local legend known for walking many miles during day walks through the city center.

Lower Wabash Ave. when Joseph Guardia approached him, poured gasoline on him, started the fire and ran away, prosecutors said. The incident was recorded on a security camera.

Kromelis suffered burns on more than 50 percent of his body, and authorities said they did not expect him to live. He received treatment for months before his death.
Guardia admitted starting the fire and said he thought he was just burning a pile of blankets, prosecutors said. But authorities said Guardia stood over Kromelis for 16 seconds while Kromelis slept, exposing Kromelis’s legs and possibly his face.
Guardia was charged with attempted murder and arson. It was not immediately clear how those charges might change after Kromelis’s death.
