The Colleton County courthouse was evacuated during the Alex Murdaugh murder trial on February 8 at around 12:00 p.m. after a man he called claimed there was “a bomb in the judge’s chamber,” according to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
No threats or devices were found after a search of the building by the South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement’s bomb squad.Authorities said investigators were able to trace the call to the Ridgeland Correctional Institute in Jasper County and South Carolina Department of Corrections staff found a cellphone i n the possession of an inmate.

The inmate was identified as Joey Dean Coleman and an arrest warrant was obtained for him, authorities said. “At this time, no direct connection between Joey Coleman and Alex Murdaugh or Murdaugh’s trial has been identified,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.
Coleman is charged with making a bomb threat, which is a felony. Authorities say that if he is found guilty, he could serve no less than one year and no more than 10 years. Since then, the South Carolina Department of Corrections has transferred him to a different prison for administrative reasons. The investigation is ongoing.
