Jim Matthews, an overnight host on WWJ-AM, has died after a suspected killer attacked him on Friday, September 23. The horrific incident also sent Matthews’ girlfriend and his two children to the hospital. The woman’s age is believed to be 35, while the children are between five and ten years old.
Although the identity of the suspect has not been revealed, it has been said that he is 54 years old and the family knew him. Reports also said that the accused was also admitted to hospital after he attempted to take his own life following the attack. Chesterfield Township Police Chief Brian Bassett said: “Our investigation has determined that this is an isolated tragedy that does not pose a danger to our community at this time. The Chesterfield Department of Public Safety will not rest until we have received justice for our victims.”

According to reports, Matthews’ girlfriend somehow managed to flee the crime scene with the five-year-old before a motorist stopped and helped her and also called the police. The woman reportedly had stab wounds when she and the child were taken to hospital. When cops arrived at Matthews’ Chesterfield Township home, they found the 57-year-old newscaster dead. However, her ten-year-old son was found alive but seriously injured in a closet.
Police officers were also reportedly able to find the accused killer in the basement of the house. At the time he was suffering from self-inflicted injuries and a drug overdose. The reason behind the apparent violent assault has yet to be determined, The New York Post reported.
Meanwhile, WWJ 950 released a statement remembering Matthews. It read: “Jim Matthews of WWJ Newsradio 950 was tragically killed Friday afternoon in Chesterfield Township. Jim worked as an overnight news anchor for nearly seven years. He would often talk to his co-workers about his children and his love for them and his adventures at school.”
“He was a consummate professional and dedicated himself to WWJ and the broadcast industry. He loved giving the latest news to the listeners about him. Many tears have been shed in our newsroom this afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s family and friends. Our colleagues from the CBS News Radio Network also paid their respects to Jim during their 8 p.m. meeting. news report,” the statement added.
Several people paid tribute to Twitter also with a writing: “My condolences to all of you. We lost a dear colleague suddenly last year. I actually announced it on the air. It’s hard, but I managed to put my emotions in a box and went on air. I know that you will continue to serve the Detroit metro area as you always have.”
The second tweeted: “? I am deeply sorry for your loss. We will continue to pray for Jim’s family, friends and colleagues.” “My God, I listened to it a lot. What a beautiful voice, dedication, sympathy… I feel very sorry for all of you. What can we do?” added the third.
