Grant Wahl Wiki – Grant Wahl Biography
Renowned American soccer journalist Grant Wahl died suddenly on Friday after collapsing while covering a World Cup match in Qatar, his agent said. The US Soccer Federation said it was “heartbroken to learn” of Wahl’s death. His wife responded to the statement by U.S. Soccer on Twitter, saying she was “completely shocked”.
Qatar World Cup organizers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), paid tribute to Wahl’s “enormous love of football” and offered their condolences to his family, friends and colleagues from the media. Wahl, a former sportswriter for Sports Illustrated who switched to online publishing platform Substack, had been tweeting about the Netherlands-Argentina game on Friday.

Grant Wahl Cause of Death
His agent, Tim Scanlan, told Reuters that Wahl “appeared to be in some kind of acute distress at the start of extra time” in the quarterfinal match. Scanlan said an attempt was made to revive Wahl in the press box before he was taken to a local hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
“We are in contact with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure that the process of repatriation of the body is carried out in accordance with the family’s wishes,” the SC spokesperson said. Qatar’s international media office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“Everyone is emotional and it’s really traumatic,” Scanlan said. “He was a true advocate for the men’s and women’s games and really cared deeply about the sport. He was an empath and truly a brilliant writer.” Gianni Infantino, president of world soccer governing body FIFA, offered his condolences, saying in a statement that Wahl’s “love for soccer was immense and his reports will be missed by all who follow the world game.”
Wahl said in late November that he was briefly detained at a security checkpoint at the World Cup stadium when he tried to enter while wearing a rainbow T-shirt in support of the LGBTQ community. In Qatar, same-sex relationships are illegal. He said World Cup security denied him entry to the United States’ first match against Wales at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan and asked him to remove his shirt.
Wahl wrote Monday that he had visited a hospital while in Qatar. “I didn’t have covid (I test regularly here) but today I went to the medical clinic in the main media center and was told I probably had bronchitis,” he posted on Substack. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Twitter that the department had been in close communication with Wahl’s family.
“We are engaged with senior Qatari officials to ensure that his family’s wishes are carried out as quickly as possible,” Price said. The US soccer community shared an immediate outpouring of grief at the news. “He was a kind and caring person whose passion for soccer and dedication to journalism were immeasurable,” Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said. “This is so devastating,” two-time World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe said on Twitter. “All love to his family and his loved ones.”
