Former MP Jeremy Buckingham mourned the tragic death of his son, who allegedly took his own life a day after revealing to his parents that he had “suffered the worst abuse” by a relative.
The former Greens MP shared the news in a Facebook post on Friday, August 19, writing how his “beautiful golden boy” Eden had died earlier this week. The devastated father described his 23-year-old son as a “sensitive and intelligent warrior” who had been struggling with mental health issues for years. Buckingham vowed to bring his son’s alleged abuser to justice and thanked the NSW Police and State Emergency Services for taking care of him. The politician said he will remember his “beautiful child” every day and will meet him again “at the long table in Valhalla,” a reference to a majestic hall in Norse mythology where the gods reside.
Eden was 21 years old.

“These are the harshest and most unbearable words,” Buckingham wrote. “My beautiful golden boy Eden is gone. I love him so much and can’t believe I have to go on without him. Tragically, he took his own life on Monday. His family and friends knew of his struggle, that his mental health had worsened.” been a challenge from a young age, but Eden fought hard: he was a sensitive and intelligent warrior.”
The former deputy said that his son could not live with the shame after allegedly being abused by a relative. Eden, who had recently beaten addiction and was looking to the future, ended his life just one day after revealing his alleged abuse to his parents. “Eden couldn’t live with the truth of him telling us a day before his death that he had suffered the worst abuse from a relative,” Buckingham continued. “Her trust in him, faith and hope in him were shattered. He couldn’t live with the secret shame and guilt, and he couldn’t live with the revealed truth. He said he didn’t want to be the guy this happened to. It was too much for him. I get it and I’m not mad at him. I know why.” The grieving father has since deactivated his Facebook account.
Earlier this week, police issued a missing person alert saying they had serious concerns for Eden’s well-being. Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, a police spokeswoman said his body was finally found near a walking path in the suburb of Bellingen, New South Wales, on Wednesday, August 17, around 4 p.m. “Officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District have launched investigations to locate a man last seen at a home in Bellingen on Monday,” the spy told the newspaper. “After extensive investigations, the body of a man was located a short distance from a walking path in Bellingen at around 4pm yesterday. A report will be prepared for the coroner’s information.”
Buckingham served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2011 to 2019. He was a member of the Greens from 2011 to 2018, but split from the party in December 2018. He returned to politics in June this year, joining Legalize Cannabis. Party and campaign to decriminalize the popular drug throughout the country.
“In Australia, 65,000 people are arrested each year for simple Cannabis possession, tens of thousands and more are brought to court and needlessly fined or criminalized, and thousands more are imprisoned ruining their lives at great cost to the taxpayer.” he said as he explained his decision to join the party. “It’s time for this to end. It’s time for us to have a rational, data-driven debate on a sensible approach to cannabis law reform. It’s time to legalize it. Let’s tackle this problem sensibly, create a huge profit industry for our economy and farmers. and release a drug that millions of Australians use regularly,” Buckingham added.
