Three life sentences have been imposed on the neighbour who was found guilty of killing and sexually assaulting a 23-year-old Down syndrome woman inside the flat where she lived alone. A jury of the defendant’s partners found David Jasante Cunningham, 42, guilty on February 9 of the unfathomable crimes of aggravated murder and two counts of objective sexual penetration in Melia Angelic Jones’ death in December 2021. Cunningham was given three life terms on Thursday during the hearing.
In response to the decision, Commonwealth attorney Bryan Porter stated that the “predator” would only be “free to ponder” the depths of his “vile” acts for the remainder of his days. “Today, a predator was made to answer for the intentional rape and murder of a priceless human being. The defendant will spend the rest of his life in a prison, free to think back on and recount his heinous deeds. Porter declared, “He doesn’t deserve any better. But I don’t want to concentrate on the accused. I like to concentrate on Melia Jones’ great and loving life instead.

The senior prosecutor added, “Melia will always be remembered for her laughter, her dancing, and the happiness she brought to others’ lives.” Jones was captured on camera dancing the day before she was killed while waiting for her dinner, according to NBC Washington. Prosecutors claim that she killed Jones there after sexually assaulting him and then attempted to make it look like a robbery was the cause of death. On December 7, 2021, Jones’ father and stepmother tragically discovered her dead in her flat. She was wearing a plastic bag over her head and her loved one was dead after being strangled. She had a Hannah Montana blanket over her body.
Together, the evidence led law enforcement to the conclusion that Jones was the victim of a “extremely violent murder.” On December 8, 2021, the medical examiner declared Jones’ death a homicide, according to the authorities. Cunningham’s DNA was discovered beneath the victim’s fingernails despite her initial denials that she kissed Jones only once and later claims that their sexual activity was consensual.
According to an obituary, Jones resided in Alexandria, Virginia, on South Van Dorn Street, which is close to the Van Dorn Street subway stop and just off I-395. Jones, an Alexandria native and Mount Vernon High School alumnus, also attended the Pulley Career Centre. Melia took part in two Flags through America ceremonies honouring warriors buried at Arlington National Cemetery while she was a high school student.
She also took part in numerous civic cleanliness initiatives. She took part in the Workplace Awareness and Transition (WAT) Programme during her time in high school. She was acknowledged as Employee of the Month at the Fort Belvoir [Army] Commissioner between October 2015 and June 2016, according to her obituary. She worked as a maid and caterer at the Crystal City Marriott Hotel when she was attending Pulley Career Centre.
She received Employee of the Month recognition twice. She won the Employee of the Month Award for Achievement and Exceeding Expectations and the Perfect Attendance Award while working as a Customer Service Representative at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Melia was given the Perfect Attendance Award for her work as a kiosk stocker at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport between October 2019 and March 2020.
Her obituary added, “Melia adored performing and dancing with her favourite gospel performers, including Michael Jackson, Big Time Rush, Elvis Presley, Arianna Grande, and Justin Bieber. “Melia cherished every member of her family dearly, and she delighted in being together with her loved ones, friends, and classmates. She left behind a legacy of kindness and sweetness. She had been baptised and professed faith in Jesus. Cunningham apparently refused to accept responsibility for the verdict and is thinking about appealing.
