Darrell Brooks, the Waukesha parade killer, has been found guilty by the Waukesha County jury on all 76 counts against him. This includes six counts of intentional homicide in the first degree, since his dramatic trial has come to an end. The 12-member jury passed judgment on the 40-year-old man accused of murdering six people in the parade and a series of charges of “recklessly endangering safety” by using a dangerous weapon.
Brooks was seen burying his head in his hands as the first count was read. A person in court, who was believed to be a family member of one of the victims, yelled, “Burn him in hell, you piece of shit.” The man walked out of court before the judge continued reading the 76 counts against Brooks. Judge Jennifer Dorow had scheduled a hearing for Monday, October 31, where the sentence will be announced and the families of the victims will be given the opportunity to speak. “It was a brief moment of relief,” Laurie Hogeland, a friend of many parade victims, told reporters outside court. “
But then all the pain comes back. The pain comes back,” she added. Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly said in an official statement, “I am grateful that the jury found the defendant guilty on all counts. We can now refocus on moving forward as a community and continuing the healing process.”
Police Chief Dan Thompson also responded to the jury trial: “In nearly a year since this tragedy, there has not been a day that our community has not suffered. The families of the victims, as well as our first responders, continue to deal with the lasting effects of that day’s horrors.”
He further said, “We are grateful for the support that has come in from around the world and we ask that you continue to keep everyone involved in your prayers.” Brooks ran over several people with his SUV at the annual Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on November 21, 2021. The culprits will serve life in prison while the official sentencing is due on October 31.
