In her upcoming memoir, Constance Wu revealed that she was sexually harassed by a senior production staffer from the now-defunct ABC sitcom ‘Fresh Off the Boat’. The 40-year-old actress in her book “Making a Scene” simply uses the staff member’s initials, according to the New York Times. Wu further recounts that the boy exhibited domineering traits during the show’s first season in 2015, including “demanding that she handle all of her business matters and tell her what to wear.”
“Fresh Off the Boat was my first television show,” Wu told the New York Times. “I was thrown into this world. I don’t have parents in the industry. And because he was 30 years old, people thought he knew what he was doing. It made me paranoid and embarrassed.” The actress, who played matriarch Jessica Huang on the show, says things got physical when she and the producer went to a sporting event together. The guy “placed her hand on her thigh, her hand finally grazed her crotch.” Wu claims that when she allegedly asked him to stop, they both covered up the alleged act.

In a panel discussion at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, DC, he explained why he decided to publish his version of the alleged assault. “I kept my mouth shut for a long time about a lot of sexual harassment and bullying that I received in the first two seasons of the show. Because, after the first two seasons, once it was a hit, once I wasn’t afraid of losing my job anymore, that’s when I was able to start saying ‘no’ to harassment, ‘no’ to bullying, from this particular producer,” he said, as reported by Variety. “And then I thought, ‘You know what? I handled it, no one has to know, I don’t have to tarnish the reputation of this Asian-American producer, I don’t have to tarnish the reputation of the show.
During his prolonged absence from the public eye, Wu worked on his autobiography. She took a three-year hiatus from social media after receiving criticism for tweeting that she was “very upset” and “literally in tears” over the 2019 renewal of ‘Fresh Off the Boat’.
Before a friend intervened to save her life, she even attempted suicide. Wu further stated that “not always the most flattering portrayal” of herself can be found in her upcoming memoir. However, she emphasized that he is “as honest as I know how to be.”
