Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu has died at the age of 31 after being missing for days following the Turkey-Syria earthquake. The former Premier League footballer was reportedly in the historic Turkish city of Antakya when the natural calamity struck on Monday, February 6.

Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, confirmed the unfortunate news on Twitter: Please announce to all supporters that Christian Atsu’s body was unfortunately recovered this morning. My condolences to his family and loved ones.” She further added, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for his prayers and support.”

Earlier, the Hatayspor football club, for which Atsu played, erroneously stated that he was found alive after the earthquake, which claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people in southern Turkey and northern Syria. Hatayspor vice president Mustafa Özat reportedly said: “Christian Atsu was taken out injured.

Our sports director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.”Furthermore, the Ghana Football  Association also released a statement saying, “We have received positive news that Christian Atsu has been successfully rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and is receiving treatment. Let’s keep praying for Christian,” according to The Guardian.

At the time, Turkish goalkeeper Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan was also declared to have lost his life due to the disaster. Yeni Malatyaspor, his club, tweeted: “Our goalkeeper Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan lost his life after being under the collapse of the earthquake. May he rest in peace. We will not forget you, beautiful person.”

Meanwhile, tributes started flowing on social media after Atsu’s death. EuroFoot wrote on Twitter: “It is with the utmost sadness that I have to write this tweet. Christian Atsu sadly passed away after the earthquake in Türkiye, confirms Hatayspor. We will never forget you. BREAK.” Ghana Yesu shared: “Ghana should have a special date and make it a public holiday to celebrate Christian Atsu.

He deserves it.” Posting a video of him, one fan stated: “Absolutely tragic news about Christian Atsu, may he rest in peace, here’s the last goal from him which was a last minute winner for Hatays just a few hours before the earthquake ?.”

When he runs up the wing, he’s lightning fast, he’s terrifying… and he makes all the guys sing… #NUFC #RIP #ATSU ??,” another fan expressed. Hasaacas Ladies FC shared: “Everyone at Hasaacas Ladies FC sympathizes with the family of Christian Atsu and all Ghanaian citizens.

This news is hard and we hope Atsu rests well in the bosom of the Almighty.” “RIP Christian Atsu. Although you are no longer with us in body, your memory lives on in our hearts and minds. We miss you very much and think of you often. You were loved and appreciated while you were here, and that love and appreciation continues even in your absence. RIP,” added one user.
