In his soon-to-be-published book “Unexpected,” Thomas talks about the struggles the Smart family went through during the nine months they were missing and the efforts that were made to search for the teenager.
Elizabeth Ann Smart was abducted at the young age of 14 on June 5, 2002, at knifepoint by Brian David Mitchell from her home in the Federal Heights neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. Mitchell and her wife, Wanda Barzee, held her captive for nine months outside Salt Lake City and then in San Diego County, California. Mitchell, who claimed to be a religious preacher, repeatedly raped and physically abused her.

Chris Thomas, whom Elizabeth describes as “like a big brother”, served as the Smarts’ publicist after she was kidnapped. “She has puffy sunburned cheeks, tightly braided blonde pigtails and she’s wearing a gray top that looks like it’s sewn from sheets,” he wrote. “A frayed rope serves as her belt, holding up her dirty, well-worn, oversized jeans,” he added. He also describes how Elizabeth’s father, Ed, was extremely angry that detectives questioned her after they rescued the teenager.
Thomas also shared the moment Elizabeth was reunited with her siblings after months of being away from them. “All of her brothers, except for 4-year-old William, immediately hug her,” Thomas said. William was too young to recognize her in the devastating condition she found herself in.
The case attracted the interest of the nation and the media, which is why various stories and conspiracies circulated about it. In his book, Thomas also shares information about how the family reacted when the media published a story accusing a family member of being involved in Elizabeth’s kidnapping, which echoed the JonBenet Ramsey case.

He said his day would start at 3:30 a.m. m., when they would contact cable television shows and networks before preparing Elizabeth’s parents, Ed and Lois, as well as other family members,
beginning at 4:30 a.m. m. for his interviews, which were scheduled to start at 5:00 a.m. m. until 10 am They would then regroup for an 11 am press conference with authorities, followed by an hour of one-on-one interviews with members of the print media.
