Annette Schnee was 21 years old when she disappeared while hitchhiking from Breckenridge to Blue River on January 6, 1982. That same night, 29-year-old Bobbi Jo Oberholtzer was hitchhiking from Breckenridge to Alma when she disappeared.

“Oberholtzer’s husband reported her missing and the next morning they discovered Bobbi Jo’s driver’s license and other identification cards, her blue backpack, an orange bootie, a woolen glove and a bandana covered in blood. Later that afternoon, her body was found 400 feet from the top of Hoosier Pass, off the road, hidden by snowbanks.
She had been shot twice,” reads part of a CDAC press release.On July 3, a boy found Schnee’s body while she was fishing. Schnee had been shot in the back and was wearing an orange bootie that matched the one in the Oberholtzer scene.
The case went cold, but the Schnee family eventually hired a man named Charlie McCormick who worked on the case for decades. McCormick eventually found out about United Data Connect services and was able to use DNA evidence from the scene to identify a suspect.
On March 22, 2021, Alan Phillips was charged with three counts of first degree murder and two counts of second degree kidnapping for both victims. Following a trial that began Aug. 29 and ended Sept. 15, a jury convicted Phillips on all eight counts. Phillips is currently 71 years old and faces life in prison.
“It’s an amazing feeling to have justice after so long and bring closure to families,” said 11th Judicial District Assistant District Attorney Mark Hurlbert, according to the CDAC. “This absolutely gives hope. To the people. Being this case so old, this shows that there is no case that cannot be solved”.
