Auriol Grey Cause of Death

On Thursday, Gray was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to three years in prison. Ward’s husband of 53 years, David Ward, shared a heartbreaking statement after the sentencing, according to the police statement. After 53 years of happy marriage, Celia was taken from me in the most horrible way, leaving me alone with my memories.

She was kind, calm, careful, cheerful, and competent in everything she did. Her death has caused me great suffering. We trusted each other, shared the same sense of humor and outlook on life, and enjoyed each other’s company. I miss her terribly.”His daughter Gillian added: “Celia Ward was my mother, my husband’s mother-in-law and my son’s beloved grandmother, but most importantly, the love of my father’s life. HisĀ  untimely death has turned our world upside down.” .

And not a day goes by that I don’t wish I could pick up the phone to ask her for advice, celebrate the special events in our lives, or just tell her how much I love her.” She went on to talk about her late mother: “It’s easy to say how wonderful my mother was…she was passionate about her family and was always there to help and support us. She was from a generation that made and repaired, kept a spotless home, and always put other first.

Her death has put a damper on what should have been one of the most enjoyable times for us as a family. We can never forget the past two and a half years, but now is the time to start reminiscing about the wonderful memories and times we had with Mom , and I hope to find some peace.” In surveillance footage of the incident, Gray is heard yelling at Ward to “get off the [expletive] pavement,” according to the BBC.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Simon Spence KC claimed that Gray was “angry at the presence of a cyclist on a pavement”, the BBC reported. Although police did not confirm whether the sidewalk was a shared bike path during the trial, Judge Sean Enright, who sentenced Grey, confirmed that he was.

After Ward fell into the street, an oncoming car “had no opportunity to stop or take action to avoid it,” the jury was told, according to the outlet. Gray fled the scene before first responders arrived and went to the local Sainsbury’s supermarket to buy groceries. The judge said Gray was “territorial on the pavement” and “resented” Ward for riding on it.

Although the jury was told that Gray has cerebral palsy, Judge Enright said that “these actions are not explained by the disability.” He said Gray lied to authorities about what happened and “didn’t say a word about remorse until today,” the BBC reported. The judge pointed out that “the consideration of other road users is the lesson of this tragic case.”

The driver who hit Ward also testified, saying he feels terrible about what happened, noting that “there’s always a part of me that feels guilty” and that his world “has been turned upside down,” the BBC reported. Grey’s attorney, Miranda Moore KC, said there was “no intent to cause harm or an apparent risk of harm” and said she plans to appeal the judgment of her client.

Moore did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. “This is a difficult and tragic case,” Investigator and Detective Sergeant Mark Dollard said in the police statement. “Everyone will have their own opinion of cyclists on the sidewalks and bike lanes, but what is clear is that Grey’s response to Celia’s presence on a pedal bike was totally blown out of proportion and was ultimately found to be illegal, which which resulted in Celia’s untimely and unnecessary death. I hope is a stark reminder to all road users to take care and be considerate of one another.”
