Incident Detail
“She’s the mother, and she’s the one responsible,” said Palm Beach County Detective Brittany Christoffel, who was able to put together the investigation after the baby’s DNA matched that of a relative. PBSO Captain Steven Stravelli said the agency received numerous tips, but none proved fruitful. The case eventually went cold, he said. The match with the relative led to the baby’s father, Christoffel said.
“We got DNA from the father, who was very cooperative,” Christoffel said. “He didn’t know anything about this baby. He knew that he had a girlfriend at the time who told him that she had been pregnant but she had taken care of him. He was thinking that she maybe had an abortion.”
Christoffel said she took an undercover DNA sample from Singh that turned out to be a match. “We just found a piece of junk that was thrown away,” she said. Authorities were also able to obtain phone records locating Singh in the Boynton Beach Inlet about 40 hours before Baby June was discovered floating in the ocean.
Christoffel said Singh confessed to the crime. Singh told authorities that she didn’t know she was pregnant until she gave birth, Christoffel said. Singh said that she gave birth and, when she came to, she did not know if the baby was alive or dead.
“She didn’t know what to do with it, and he still had it with her, and he decided that he was going to dump her there,” Christoffel said. Christoffel added that Singh appeared to be nervous and worried about her future when she was questioned. Authorities named the baby June because she was found by an off-duty Boynton Beach firefighter on June 1, 2018, NBC Miami reported.
“Law enforcement men and women always think they’re tough and they’ve seen it all, but I guarantee when you see a newborn baby floating in the ocean like someone just discarded it like a piece of trash, you reaches the heart.” Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said. When the baby entered the driveway, she was believed to be already dead, Christoffel said, adding that Singh has no other children.
Lynn University confirmed to NBC Miami that she was a dispatcher there from July 2021 until recently. “We were shocked to learn of the charges against Ms. Singh and have terminated her employment,” a university spokesperson said in a statement to the outlet. Singh spent the days after she dumped her baby in the water searching for news indicating the child’s discovery, Christoffel said.
