A university student has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old grandmother. Michelle Hanson, 47, was found dead in Brady Street, Sunderland, on Saturday December 3, with injuries to her neck. Northumbria Police said Alexander Carr, 33, was arrested in London on Wednesday night. He remains in police custody.
Police had launched a manhunt for Carr and students at the University of Sunderland were warned to keep away from him if they saw him. Michelle’s family at this devastating time and our specially trained officers will continue to support them in any way we can.

“Her family of hers deserves answers and we are committed to finding out what happened and bringing everyone involved to justice. “We would like to thank the public for their help thus far and would ask anyone with any information that has not yet been released to contact law enforcement.
“We would also ask people to avoid any speculation that could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.” Shannon Brown said: “As a family we are all devastated by what happened. My mom was a caring, kind and loving person. She would never hurt anyone, even if someone did something to hurt her, she would forgive them because she always saw the good in people.
‘She always kept going and she never gave up. “It is heartbreaking for us as a family to know that we will never see her again. We will all miss her.’ She added: ‘Her granddaughter of hers is turning two in a couple of weeks and it’s devastating that she doesn’t get the chance to meet her nana.
‘Our lives will never be the same again. All we want now is justice for our mother. ‘Please, if she has any information that may help the police with their investigation, please do not hesitate to contact them. Any little piece of information could help. Our mother deserves justice.
Tributes have flooded our social media, with people paying their respects to the victim and her family. One wrote: ‘Still can’t figure it out. She was harmless, she didn’t deserve this. My heart goes out to Michelle and her family.’ Another added: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I don’t understand why anyone would want to hurt you. My thoughts are with Michelle’s family at this sad time.”
When emergency workers arrived, they found Ms. Hanson dead, having suffered consistent injuries to her neck, apparently caused by a blade. Police soon changed an appeal on Carr’s whereabouts to a murder investigation, after they named him the “key individual” in their investigations.
Police had conducted a forensic investigation into her death, with door-to-door investigations in the area. Behind the crime scene tent, the battered door to his house was seen hanging on his hinges. A family friend described Ms Hanson as “a vulnerable woman who would have been defenseless against any attacker.” Neighbors on the street, including many retirees, were shocked by what happened, but said the area had its problems.
One woman said: ‘It can be a bit difficult around here. But the worst you hope for is someone breaking someone else’s windows. Crimestoppers announced on Friday that it was offering a £10,000 reward for anyone who could turn in information that would help arrest Carr.
‘Michelle cut a bit of a lonely figure. But she was a pretty cunning girl. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. It’s crazy of her what happened to her. A family friend said that the last time she saw Ms. Hanson was a month ago when she seemed extremely vulnerable. She said: ‘I was surprised to see her like this. ‘She was in a bit of trouble to be honest and she drank a lot. She seemed smart enough, but she could tell that deep down she was deeply unhappy.
