Osvaldo Sanchez Incident Detail

Sanchez, who investigators claim was posing as a licensed veterinarian, was previously introduced to the couple who owned Sugar. Later, when it seemed that the pregnant Sugar was “having difficulty” giving delivery, the owners contacted Sanchez. Sanchez allegedly made the trip to the couple’s house, where he “examined” Sugar before operating on her via C-section and spaying her

According to authorities, the treatment was carried out in Sanchez’s mobile office, a former ambulance. During the treatment, Sanchez removed a stillborn puppy and billed Sugar’s owners $600. According to the CCSO release, “Sugar later fell ill from an infection as a result of the surgery and spent the following week in the care of a licensed veterinary clinic in dire condition.”

Owners of the 6-pound dog Sugar brought him to a 24-hour emergency animal hospital on May 25, where trained veterinary staff members performed an ultrasound and found a concerning finding.Investigators learned from the veterinarians at the clinic that normal string or sewing thread, rather than the conventional suture material typically used in such treatments, had been utilized to close Sugar’s surgical incision.

The use of that substance was determined to be Sugar’s infection’s most likely source. Later that day, as Sugar’s condition deteriorated, her owners brought her back to the same animal hospital. Sadly, the dog developed an illness and passed away later that day as a result of “multiple complications from the surgery” carried out by Sanchez, according to the police.

At the pet hospital, one of the doctors who treated Sugar said to CCSO investigators that the Chihuahua’s C-section Sanchez performed was “not an uncommon surgery for pregnant dogs” and added that “had a qualified veterinarian performed the procedure on Sugar, she likely would have survived.” Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk urged the public to exercise due care and to only entrust the lives of dogs to a qualified veterinarian in a statement following Sanchez’s arrest.

Unlicensed individuals who conduct surgery, administer medication, and make claims to offer necessary care put the lives of pets in danger, according to Sheriff Rambosk. “These people who think they can get away with breaking the law will be apprehended and held accountable — our hardworking detectives will see to it.” On Saturday, it was unclear if Sanchez had hired a lawyer to represent him in the case.
