A New York City college student was recently arrested and released without bail after he allegedly sent text messages threatening to “shoot up” a Manhattan-based institution. In light of the case involving 21-year-old Din Bajrektarevic, who has been suspended and banned from campus, City University of New York officials have issued a warning to the university community.
Two days after submitting the vile comments, on November 25, 2022, Bajrektarevic of Old Bridge in New Jersey was detained as he was returning to college in Harlem. He was charged with making terroristic threats by CUNY campus police and the New York police, according to police. “When I shoot down the school, know who is to blame,” one of the letters read, according to the criminal complaint against him.

City College’s office of public safety “acted on the threat with the NYPD and the FBI, and the student was immediately identified and arrested,” according to a letter he sent to the campus community. “All CCNY public safety officers have been informed that Mr.

Bajrektarevic on the City College campus, please notify CCNY Public Safety immediately.” The email noted: “We have no reason to believe at this time that Mr. Bajrektarevic intends to violate the directive and attempt to enter the City College campus. We also have no indication that Mr. Bajrektarevic is in possession of a firearm or any other deadly weapon.”
With an alarming increase in mass shootings in the country during 2022, especially at schools and universities, citizens are concerned that Bajrektarevic will leave after being indicted on heavy charges. The text messages from him were a clear indication of the seriousness of the threat hanging over the residents of New York.
